Introduction to Sea Kayaking

A training for advance flatwater paddlers who are looking to move into sea kayaking.
Location: Kayak Launch at Wilson Park in Wickford
Training will take place in Wickford Harbor
We will move from protected to more exposed areas as the session progresses
There is a porta potty at the boat ramp
What you will need:
Sea kayak - 14’ or longer with bulkheads or float bags and static deck lines
PFD
Paddle
Spay skirt
Bilge pump
Paddle float (recommended)
Tow belt (recommended)

Course expectations, schedule
Proper gear for sea kayaking
Getting in and out of a boat
Strokes
o Efficient, powerful and comfortable forward and backward strokes
o Sweep strokes for turning the boat while moving
o Draw and pry strokes to move the boat sideways
o Rudders to hold the boat in place along some direction
o Stopping the boat
Safety/Rescue: (practice or demonstrated)
o Wet exits
o Assisted rescues
o Self-rescues with assistance on hand
o Towing
Boat Handling: (on water discussion)
o Edging the boat
o Bracing for stability or turning
o Stern and bow weighting
o Adapting to wind
o Adapting to waves

Session is free for RICKA members
All participants must sign an ACA waiver
Dress for the water – we encourage everyone to practice wet exits and rescues
Bring addition wool or synthetic layers and a paddle jacket (wind or rain) just in case
Bring a snack and a lunch
Bring plenty of water – recommended 1 qt minimum
Strap for sunglasses and regular glasses
We will begin promptly at 9:30, so please plan to arrive a little early to unload your gear.
If you are not a RICKA member we will have registration forms. RICKA membership is $15 for
the year. If you are an ACA member, please provide you membership number.
