Hypothermia -- How fast can it happen?
On Memorial Day, 1996, an 18-year old canoeist capsized into 50 degrees F lake water. He sank to the bottom before a rescuer in a boat towing the canoe could reach him. He was wearing blue jeans, a light shirt and no life jacket. His body was recovered the next day by divers. Your ability to survive accidental immersion will depend on how you prepared yourself before going out.
Dressing for the possibility of immersion helps buy time to work out a rescue in case of an accident. Warm weather does not cancel out the danger of cold water. Instead, wearing lighter clothing on warm days may increase risk.

Current Activities & Events

IMPORTANT: Scheduled trip times are DEPARTURE times, not arrival times. Just as you wouldn't arrive at the airport at 9AM for a 9AM flight you should arrive before the departure time for paddle trips, to allow adequate time to unload boats and gear and park the car. When participants arrive late it punishes everybody who arrived on time, and discourages them from arriving on time for future paddles. At its May 2005 meeting, the RICKA Executive Committee voted that trip leaders /coordinators/ facillitators/ etc., should make every effort to begin trips on time, and not more than 15 minutes late. Any person not in the water and ready to paddle 15 minutes after the scheduled start of the trip should be advised of the route the trip will take in case they want to try to catch up

When boat size or paddling skill sets are specified as requirements for participation in a trip they apply to everybody.Even if you have the experience to overcome the circumstances that necessitate these requirements they still apply to you. Once an exception is made for one individual it creates a serious problem enforcing the requirements when other less experienced paddlers demand to be allowed to participate also.

Your cooperation and understanding is greatly appreciated.

Link problems on the homepage - TheSea Kayaking web pages, the Flatwater web pages, and the Whitewater webpages all reside on hosts separate from the home site. Among other reasons, this serves a security function in that, when the main RICKAsite gets hacked (it has happened 5 times so far) the satellite sites are protected from being defaced and needing to be restored.Bear in mind that web servers, like personal computers, are subject to occassional crashes and/or occassionally have to be taken offline to be upgraded. These events are beyond our control. In the event that you are unable to access one of the satellite sites or even the home site, please wait an hour and try accessing it again before reporting a problem to the Webmaster.Thanks.
